Thoughts: Hangover II is too much!

The movie lives up to the cliché….sequels really can’t compete.

Facts state that if you are really stupid enough to do the same thing over and over again and expect different results you are a Looney. Hangover II does not match up to the original cult that it was but yes it does carve its own niche. A niche which would include, late night drunks who really would watch anything from Jerry Springer to Keeping up with the Kardashians.

The movie premise is EXACTLY the SAME…one of them is getting married and I think that is one of the major differences add a monkey in place of a tiger, a monk in place of a baby and replace Vegas with Bangkok, bada bim bada boom ….movie sequel is ready.

Similar storyline…..Stu is getting married. Stu invites Doug, Phil and Alan aka The Wolf-pack to Thailand for his wedding. Only difference is that this time they are joined by Stu’s soon-to-be brother-in-law Teddy. After a quiet night on the beach Stu, Alan and Phil wake up in a seedy apartment in Bangkok with no recollection of how they got there. Doug is back at the resort, but Teddy is missing. Throw in a monkey with a severed finger, a shaved head and a Mike Tyson style tattoo on Stu, we have Hangover II. The wolf-pack then begins the long ordeal of tracking back what they did on the streets of Bangkok to try and find Teddy before the wedding. A monk with the vow of silence, drug dealers, an international criminal and some very disturbing strippers complete the rest of the story.

Hangover is fun and entertaining for one reason, namely it’s the fact that no one in the movie knows what will happen next. It’s the unpredictability that keeps the movie ticking and the movie-goer engrossed. Sadly enough it is near impossible to re-make the magic if you have the same storyline and the same concept.

The reason I liked the movie was that somewhere it always wants you to be a part of it. The first line that any guy would have said when they left the hall would be “Dude! WE have to go to Vegas”, sadly enough it is the same feat which they try and achieve with this. The cast is the same and probably the strength of the movie. The women in the movie might as well have been merged with the background and for good reason too. There is a surprise appearance in the end though which was a real nice touch (won’t spoil it for you though) and overall Bangkok does not seem like a good location to get ‘roofied’ again.

Hangover is like my assignment which I would ‘borrow’ from someone who would have already made it and instead of trying to add a little magic to that to improve it I would send the same report with my name changed! I would get a C+ for the effort which is something I would give this movie too.

It is a decent watch and I really hope they do not have a part III else Alan’s marriage aka Hangover III would require me to copy paste this review with a few changes…..Ibiza, an Ostrich and this time probably an abandoned mime. 🙂
